A truck driver faces multiple felony charges in Rice County after he was accused of looking at sex sites before causing a pile-up that resulted in numerous injuries and the death of an unborn baby, according to a criminal complaint.
A State Patrol investigation found that the truck driver was headed north on I-35 near Faribault on Aug. 20 at about 70 mph before ramming into a Chevrolet Suburban, which had slowed down for construction backup, the charges say.
The passenger in the Suburban was 31-weeks pregnant. She was airlifted to a hospital, but her baby did not survive. The mother suffered a skull fracture. Three other children in the car were also injured, as well as the driver, according to the patrol.
The criminal charges say that a review of the truck driver’s cell phone found he visited several adult sites and sent numerous sex-related messages in the two hours leading up to the crash. His final message was sent just sent two minutes before he slammed into the Suburban, according to the charges.
