Mother dies, eight others injured in Aitkin County crash

A mother of five children died and eight others were injured in a crash in Aitkin County on June 27.

The mother, 34-year-old Maggie May Spychalla, was driving with her five children and husband as they were towing a fish house going north on Highway 169, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

As they were going through an intersection, a Dodge Ram truck driven by an 18-year-old headed east on Tame Fish Lake Road collided with Spychalla’s family.

The Tame Fish Lake Road has a stop sign at the intersection; Highway 169 does not, according to the Star Tribune.

Spychalla’s children and husband suffered non-life threatening injuries, as did the driver and a passenger in the Dodge Ram.

The Spychalla family has setup an online fundraiser to pay for the mother’s funeral expenses.
