Assisted Living resident dies after getting trapped in bed rail

Oak Park Senior Living was found responsible for maltreatment after a Minnesota Department of Health investigation discovered that a resident died after being trapped in a bed rail for two days.

The Washington County assisted living facility was required to assess the resident’s bed rail, but never did so, according to the MDH report. A staff worker who went to give the resident a shower found him on the floor with his right arm wedged between his bed and bed rail, with his feet pinned by his motorized wheelchair.

The resident told police that he had been stuck for two days. He died four days later at a hospital. The MDH reported that his cause of death was due to “complications of prolonged partial entrapment in bed rail.”
