Minnesota Supreme Court rules schools can be held liable for hiring sex abusers

Schools can be held liable for not doing due diligence before hiring teachers who go on to sexually assault students, the Minnesota Supreme Court has ruled.

The ruling involved a Minnesota charter school that hired a teacher who been investigated for sexually assaulting children. The teacher went on to sexually assault several other children. He is now serving several years in prison.

Schools had been immune to lawsuits for their hiring practices prior to the Minnesota Supreme Court’s ruling.
