Report: Minnesota sees rise in severe dog attacks

The number of severe dog bites has increased in Minnesota, according to a Star Tribune report, as victims have been severely mauled or tried in vain to fight off dogs as loved ones were being attacked and killed.

In one case, a mother and her two sons were playing on their backyard trampoline when two neighbor dogs got loose and attacked the family. One of the sons had to use a wheelchair for a month afterward; the mother’s injuries were so severe that she had to re-learn how to walk and write.

In another, two dogs mauled a 3-year-old boy as his mother and the dog’s owner tried to stop the attack, according to the Star Tribune. The boy later died.

The number of Minnesota charges for harm caused by dogs has increased each year – from eight people charged in 2020 to 22 cases in 2024, according to the Star Tribune. In Minneapolis, the number of bites has gone from 245 bites in 2021 to 350 last year.
