Cold Spring chicken plant worker dies after being pinned by equipment

A 29-year-old employee of the central Minnesota meat processing plant died after being pinned beneath equipment in a loading dock area, according to multiple media reports.

When authorities arrived at the Pilgrim’s Pride facility in Cold Springs, employees had already helped pull him out from under the equipment, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, the Cold Springs police chief said.

Pilgrim’s Pride is owned by JBS, one of the world’s largest meat packing companies. According to the Star Tribune, government regulators have fined the chicken-processing subsidiary thousands of dollars in recent years over workplace safety and health violations, a workplace injury database called Good Jobs First reported.

A JBS spokesperson told the Star Tribune the company is conducting a “full internal review” of the death and cooperating with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) investigators.

“Our thoughts are with the individual’s family, friends, and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time,” the spokesperson said.
